I decided to ask a friend of mine to give me some feedback on my preliminary task so that I could take onboard his feedback on top of the evaluation of the sequence. This meant that I could look at somebody else's opinion and gain some inspiration for my final crime opening sequence.

task, there was a lack of shot types such as pans, tilts, canted angles and tracking shots. Therefore, I have decided that I want to feature more of these in my final production. This is now one of my goals for the opening sequence. Another thing that I would like to improve for my final piece is the continuity of the sequence. Overall in my preliminary task, the continuity was harmed by simple changes such as props, clothes etc. In one of the scenes I was carrying my laptop, but then in the next the laptop had changed hands or was missing, and although this is not shown to be a massive issue, it still harms the continuity and standard of the sequence. For my preliminary task, the style of editing used was very basic. We decided to use Adobe Premiere Pro CC, and we decided to base it on a continuous edit. This ultimately meant that we did not use many transitions and the edit was very basic. Therefore, this is something else that I would like to work on when it comes to my final edit. Instead of using Premiere Pro, I will use a combination of Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro. This means that I can work on the project at home and at school and Final Cut Pro has some more advanced features such as colour grading and overlays, which will dramatically help create a scene and genre, and overall make the piece more aesthetically pleasing.
One of the things that worked well in the preliminary task was the use of the 180 degree rule, rule of thirds and the match on action and shot reverse shot scenes. The 180 degree rule had to be thought about quite carefully because we did not want to break this rule and hence the continuity of the scene. This meant that during filming, we would often find ourselves saying that we couldn't film here because it breaks the 180 degree rule. Another thing that we had to do was think about where we would create contrast and build the scene using the rule of thirds. For this we decided that it would work well to have some objects and locations central in the frame and some placed towards the edge of the frame, this worked well as the composition flows well and still comes across as being natural. The match on action was when we opened the door handle with a short of the door and then my hand followed by a shot of me walking into the room. This small further expression of detail still makes the shot more intriguing. And finally the shot reverse shot during the conversation worked well because the camera remains stationary and shows clearly those who are having a conversation and it also shows the relevant reactions and expressions. Overall, I am happy with my preliminary task as it has allowed me to learn some basic shot techniques, and how to edit using Premiere Pro. Another thing that my preliminary task has allowed me to do is see what I would like to apply to my final project, such as a larger range of cinematography, and editing techniques. |
